Another, 20years, presention
1987, What a good year for the roses. Rangers were resurgent and the SAS were rampant, especially in Loughgall where they won 8 - 0. Aaaah, bliss. It was also the year that Dr. Tam Nannet left behind his mates in the Young Loyalist Flute Band (Pollok) for pastures new. Since those early days, he has worked in a dairy and with the British Red Cross before finally settling into gainful employment in a Glasgow Distillery where, I'm told, he drinks more than he produces. Along the way, he has also found God and took up rugby (a game played by men with odd shaped balls!!), got married, fathered two kids and moved to East Renfrewshire via Cessnock and Pollok. Now, I'm not sure what kind of a relationship that he had with his previous neighbours but, a wee birdie told me that when he moved from Cessnock and Pollok, the neighbours held street parties..after he had left the area!!
As has happened on previous occasions, the band recognises the contribution made by those members who have given 20 years service to the band by way of a 20 year service medal, which is incorporated into the bands' crest. So' on Saturday 27th October 2007 at our Halloween Party, the good doctor was invited to accept this award from our band president...THE PENGUIN, and trust me, it certainly wasn't Danny de Vito who was inside the costume (these brave pills appear to be working - methinks). It's not often that the doc is lost for words but, on this occasion, his speech (and I use the term loosely) lasted for approx: 20 seconds before he was given a thunderous round of applause before being escorted off the premises. That last part wasn't true, I made it up..he didn't get a thunderous round of applause. There is now talk of a weekly presentation being made, just to shut him up!
I've "roomed" with Dr. Tam on many a trip to Ulster, and his quick, ascorbic wit is enjoyable to listen to, and he is a well - liked and respected member of our band who has made many friends over the years, none more so than in Mossley and Kilkeel (Ulster).
Congratulations are in order big chap, and you can now take your place alongside the 20 year crew (that glowing report must surely be worth a drink or two)
It's more than just a band..it's a way of life.
