BSG @ the Pavilion
Grand orange lodge of Scotland celebration night at the Glasgow pavilion theatre
Glasgow’s home of entertainment and stage shows since 1904, A place graced by such greats as the late great Harry Lauder, Hector Nicol, Jimmy Loagan, Jack Milroy, Robert Halpern, Lulu and Billy Connolly, Well November the 14th seen more “Billy boys” of the Orange variety gathered in the Pavilion to celebrate the act of Union.
The show kicked off to a full house with a fantastic a piece of history relating how we as a Nation hitched up with our English neighbours to become part of the phenomenon that led the world in trade and industry and built one of the biggest empires the world had ever seen.
3 Orange grand masters were in attendance on the night from the grand lodges of England Bro Ron Bather, Ireland Bro Robert Saulters and Scotland s own Bro Ian Wilson, each gave rousing speeches in celebration of our shared nation and brotherhood.
The night started with compere Paul Philips a comedian from Ulster.
The first musical set, heard the swirl of the pipes with a bagpipe quartet band called Celtic spirit (calm down lads Keltic spirit is how it’s said) they played a good wee set with some traditional jigs and reels mixed with some other tunes not normally associated with the pipes~ namely the rock band AC/DC
The next act to entertain the crowd was the Shotts and Dyke head and Glasgow amateurs silver flute ensemble with Mr Willie Young from Kilwinning helping out on the concert flute, the band played a great set of 20 minutes with great gusto.
We kicked in with a 20 minute set after the interval and all I can say is, it was one of the highlights of my band career to play in front of one and a half thousand people in one of Glasgow's if not Scotland's premier venues.
The bands set contained some tradition fife and drum scores like duke of fife and some old favourites such as world war melodies and lillibullero/ Brian Boru & Drowsy Maggie , of course the traditional tune list was played and very well received by the jubilant crowd. old favourites like the echoes of the 12th and Orangemen’s melodies went down a storm in a sea of union flags.
The second half saw our friends in the Queen Elizabeth accordion band lift the roof off the place with some great foot tapers that got the place jumping, a fantastic display from one of Britain’s top bands! The evening was a great success~ the crowd, the venue, silver fluting ~bagpipes ~accordions the Blackskull and a lot of patriotic singing.
Good to see Mr Wilson and the Orange Order in Scotland taking our culture and song to places like this, tonight was a great show case for the many positives in our loyalist heritage and one that band members really enjoyed
well done to all who participated attended and supported the event
